Summary of by-laws dealing with membership:
Article 2.
Membership
Section 2.1
Membership in the corporation shall be limited to persons who meet the criteria set our in Section 2.3, 2.4, or 2.5 below and whose application for admission as a member has been approved by the Membership Committee. In exceptional circumstances an applicant who does not meet criteria 2.3 may be granted membership upon the recommendation of the Membership Committee and approval of the Board of Directors.
Section 2.2
There shall be four categories of members: full, associate, emeritus and student members.
Section 2.3
Full Membership shall be extended to: (i) any person who holds a Diploma, Master's or Ph.D. degree in human genetics from a program established for the training of genetic counsellors and/or genetic associates, or (ii) any person who is a Registered Nurse, or has achieved a Bachelor's, Master's or Ph.D. degree in a related field such as nursing, social work or public health and whose primary responsibility for the equivalent of one year's experience over the 3 year period prior to application for membership has been providing genetic counselling in a medical setting or in a setting otherwise approved by the Membership Committee. Full members in good standing shall be entitled to notice of and may attend all meetings of members, vote, hold office, and serve on the Board of Directors, on committees, as a regional representative and as editor of the newsletter.
Section 2.4
Associate membership shall be extended to (i) applicants who are physicians, or dentists and whose interests focus on genetic counselling and to (ii) applicants whose interests focus on genetic counselling and who are not eligible for or who do not desire full membership or student membership. Associate members have all privileges of full members except they may not vote, serve on the Board of Directors or serve as Chairperson of a committee.
Section 2.5
Student membership shall be extended to bona fide students in a post secondary institution. Student members shall have all the privileges of associate membership.
Section 2.6
Emeritus membership shall be extended by invitation only to previous long-standing full members.
